Jake (Russell Crowe) e’ un romanziere di successo (vincitore di un Pulitzer) rimasto vedovo in seguito a un grave incidente, che si trova a dover crescere da solo l’amatissima figlia Katie, a fare i conti con i sintomi di un serio disturbo mentale e con la sua altalenante ispirazione. 27 anni dopo, Katie è una splendida ragazza che vive a New York: da anni lontana dal padre, combatte i demoni della sua infanzia tormentata e la sua incapacità di abbandonarsi ad una storia d’amore.
