Un eccentrico newyorkese (Larry David) abbandona il suo stile di vita tipico dell’upper class per abbracciare un’esistenza un po’ bohèmienne. Il cambiamento lo porta a conoscere Melodie, una giovane ragazza del sud degli Stati Uniti d’America (Evan Rachel Wood). I due, insieme alla madre (Patricia Clarckson) a e al padre (Ed Begley Jr.) della ragazza, si ritroveranno al centro di una serie di improbabili coinvolgimenti sentimentali.
